It's official... I am teaching Scrapbooking again! Sooo excited
about this! I have been through a bit of a dry spell in recent times
so this new venture is a welcome change. :)

What Are You? . . A carrot, an egg, or a cup of coffee?

A carrot, an egg, or a cup of coffee... You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.

Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Up Before The Birds...

It happened again!

I was up before the birds to see a beautiful sunrise!
Shocking I know! I surprised even myself! lol

This time I was at the lookout at Mt Kuther.
I've been there once before. It was during the day
and it was lovely. But to be there at sunrise looking out over
Brisbane and the mountains... BEAUTIFUL!
Cold... but very beautiful!

At first it's like looking out into the night and seeing
the city lights spread as far as the eye can see.
Then as the sun begins the make its way through
the clouds and above the horizon the city wakes up,
the fog begins to lift and everything becomes clearer.
It was quite uplifting and very symbolic for me.

Below are two photographs from the morning.
They really don't do the view justice.
Wish I had remembered my tripod.
I'm a little out of practice.

No... Surely Not... Oh My!!!

I cannot believe how long it has been since I posted
something to this blog! Slack Sarah...very slack!

So in an effort to redeem myself i'll be making this
new post today.In fact I will attempt to make several
new posts including some photography,a new layout
...and perhaps a few random thoughts.

A week or so ago I was lucky enough
to witness the most amazing sunset.
Something about it was 'just right'.

I was having a lazy Sunday afternoon down on the bay
with the paperand a game of football.
As the sun started to make it's way towards the horizon
the wind picked up and it became too chilly to stay outdoors.
I started to head home, all the while watching as the sky
changed colours. The colours of sky were very subtle at first
but quickly built up to be magnificent and very vibrant.

Below are two photographs taken on my trip home.
Believe it or not thes two photographs we taken within about
half an hour of each other and I haven't changed any of the
hue settings with photoshop. Cross My Heart! <3

Horrific & Devestating...

Since the Victorian Bushfires started I have been glued to the news online, on the television and on the radio. The news of missing, injured and worse still, perished Victorians hits my eyes and ears with such force that it hurts. I don’t even know these people and yet I find my heart going out to them. I find myself with tears in my eyes and my hands drawn to my mouth in utter shock. The ever increasing death toll is deafening and I can not even begin to imagine what those poor people have witnessed. How do you describe to someone what it is like to be scared for your life, for the lives of your family, friends, neighbours and co-workers? How do you deal with such a thing? To lose loved ones in an instant… To lose everything you have worked for, building a marriage, a family, a home... To lose everything but the clothing you were wearing as you fled... Is it even possible to understand what that must be like if you have not been through it?

It frustrates me when television programs create stories of negativity at a time like this… stories about how the Federal Government is not doing enough. Instead of wasting time pushing political stories surely their time would be much better spent promoting charities and so forth. I am livid about the reports I heard this morning of charity scammers who are preying on the generosity of others and denying people the help that they deserve. I had no idea that such low lives existed. I place them in the same category as the arsonist/s who have taken the lives of innocent people through selfishness and shear insanity.

What can we do to help?
There are numerous charities that need urgent donations of food, clothing and blankets. Banks are taking cash donations in an effort to bridge the gap between the payments that the Federal Government has offered and the reality of what those in need require to start rebuilding their lives. Let’s not forget the Red Cross… They are in desperate need of more blood. Woolworths and Coles have donation strategies in place and Volunteers in the state of Victoria are also in high demand. I understand that every single one of us is not in the best financial state (money or time) however, just think of what one small charitable deed could mean to a someone who has lost everything. If that was you, wouldn’t you want someone to reach out generously and help you back to your feet?

Do whatever you can to help, however small and insignificant it may seem.

Sunrise Sunset

I have seen more than my fair share of sunsets
but it is not very often at all that I am up early enough
to see the sun rise in the morning sky.

On a recent trip to Bundaberg QLD, I had a little 'stop-over'
to wait for fuel. Waiting and trying to sleep at 1am in a 4wd is
not my idea of fun. Thankfully we were refilled by 6am and
my reward for an uncomfortable night

...a BEAUTIFUL sunrise! :)

Santa... I've been very good this year!

Santa came early to me this year and he gave me a brand new Canon EOS 450D! The very camera I had been drooling over for weeks! Santa is so clever!

Yesterday I was busting to try it out. Owen and I found a great park in Rouse Hill. We'll definitely be going back. So much stuff to play on... even a mini maze! Too cool!!

Week 1's challange was to capture images that reflect your emotions. Aptly titled... EMO.
Here are my entries...

ISO 200 - f/8 - 1" - BW

symbolising my current need for escape. By indulging in my passion for reading I am taken to worlds that are not my own. For a few short chapters a night I am blinkered from my own reality.

ISO 400 - f/3.2 - 1/100 - full colour (desaturated in PS)

This one is quite possibly an obvious choice of symbolism for feeling trapped. This relates to the way I feel about Owen's issues (Autism/ADHD) when I am at my lowest. When I feel like there is no escape possible my thoughts snowball. I feel encapsulated in the whole situation and i am suffocted by guilt. I am taken over by a fear that sucks the life right out of me. It scares me senseless! Luckily for my own sanity I am a positive person and make a concious decision not to let these feelings take over completely. It's ok to be scared but I must stay strong and fight for what I know i can achieve. I am a mother after all... and mothers can beat the unconquerable! (is that even a word?)

After posting two photos that represent negative feelings I needed to capture a positive. This one is a HUGE positive for me! I LOVE CHRISTMAS! I am already beginning to feel the Christmas Spirit rise up from my toes and fill my heart with a happiness that feels so good.

Christmas to me means so many things. It's a very special time of year for me. Spending more time with family and friends... the people i love... and showing them how much i care. I love giving gifts and making people's hearts happy. Traditions are in an abbundance at this time of year... selecting a new decoration for the tree each year as a keepsake, making christmas cards, decoration gingerbread, christmas light spotting on christmas eve, honey ham & eggs on christmas morning and all of the things that make up that christmas JOY!

Although these things are all lovely and special, christmas is also a difficult time of year for me too. I am an emotional person. i wear my heart on my sleeve and when i love someone, be they friend or family, i love them with all my heart without holding an ounce back. I have many memories of my Nanna spending Christmas with us. She would stay a few nights and sleep in my sister's room ( the cleaner of the two) and Karen and i would get to sleep in the same room. I remember silly things like she would have toast for breakfast and sweetner in her coffee instead of sugar, she would always have mints in her pockets and carry her knitting bag everywhere. She would always be up before mum and dad on Christmas morning (except one year when Karen had to wake her up by repeatedly flushing the toilet in the next room LOL) But all these things were special to me. We lost some of them when Nanna was moved into a home but we still made sure we included an extra special visit to her on Christmas Day. But since her passing last Nov, Christmas has changed somewhat for me. Family have moved away and Nanna is no longer here. Traditions are fading and so is that Christmas spirit that is so special to me.

I captured this image to remind myself of what Christmas means to me and to focus on all the beauty in Christmas. Here's to believing in Santa & his reindeer and to making new Christmas traditions! :)

Let this be a lesson to everyone!

ALWAYS back up you most treasured digital images onto a gazillion different media types just in case! Computers are unreliable and can cause you a lot of heartache. Computers misplace, corrupt or destroy precious photos, videos, files and so much more in just the blink of an eye! Two copies are never enough.

I learnt that lesson the hard way today. I just hope that there is a super tech-guy out there that can rescue my beloved files! If he's out there... please help me!!!

So what's the moral of the story?
BACK UP, BACK UP AND BACK UP AGAIN!!!!

Last weekend I was in desperate need of a battery recharge. No, not for my car... for me! LOL I was stressed out to the max and needed some time out. Owen spent the day with Grandma T (thank heaven for Grandma's!!!) and I went for a drive to the place that makes me take deep breaths and relax. The Central Coast of NSW. I love it up there. I spent the day at Terrigal and Avoca taking photos, eating prawns for lunch and visiting the lolly shop ;) ahhhhh... peace and quiet! Here are some photos from my day.

MOVEMBER

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is an annual charity event held during November. At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo, raising money along the way to benefit men's health - specifically prostate cancer and male depression. Movember culminates at the end of the month at official Gala Partés, Mo-Office and Mo-Town parties where Tom Selleck and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to be the Man of Movember. While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (ladies who support their guys or just love Mo's!) form an important part of Movember by recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and attending the highly anticipated Gala Partés. But it' s not all fun and games, so why the extreme behavior? Which ever way we look at it, men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy for men is five years less than for women.

The obvious question is why?
Men lack awareness about the very real health issues they face. There is an attitude that they have to be tough - "a real man" - and are reluctant to see a doctor about an illness or go for regular medical checks. Movember aims to change these attitudes and make men's health fun by putting the Mo back on the face of fashion and in the process raise some serious funds for key men's health issues, including: Prostate Cancer: because every year 2,900 Australian men die from prostate cancer and over 18,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Depression in Men: because one in six men experience

depression at any given time but most don't seek help.

The objective of Movember is to improve the state of men's health.

Movember achieves its objective by:

1. Generating awareness surrounding men's health issues,

specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.

2. Raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue: the national depression initiative so they may better achieve their goals and improve the state of men's health.

3. Changing the way men think about, discuss and treat their own health issues.

Living in Australia means that we don't really get to celebrate Halloween. Well we do, but not like the US. That's one of my reasons for wanting to travel there one day. I'd love to experience an American Halloween!

Owen's pre-school had a Halloween theme all week. The parents were asked to dress their children in appropriate attire ;)

Since Owen doesnt own any dress up costumes, I bought him a cute witches hat that was rather boyish (so i told him LOL), sprayed his hair orange and even painted his face. He thought it was awesome! On the way to school he made sure thta I was aware that Owen wasn't going to school today... but 'Spider Owen' was! Too cute! :)

I've been tagged by the super, ultra, and totally talented Sarah Scherwin to share 6 things you may not know about me, so here goes:

1. My first plane experience was as an adult. I flew to Melbourne. I hate planes!!! So the flight i took to Perth one year...by my self... was not fun at all!!! AND i still havent been to another country. No overseas trips for this little black duck. One day i hope to visit places all over the world but for now i am content to dream. By the time i am ready for world trip we might have some kind of transport that just zaps you instantly to the next place. None of this plane garbage. How they dont fall out of the sky is beyond me!!! :P

2. I only have two wisdom teeth and they are still way up high in my jaw. Thankfully!

3. I cannot go a day with out some kind of lolly. It's my vice. a bad one at that. Just like the ad says... I LOVE LOLLIES! :P

4. I wish i was a famout singer. I love to sing. Not to sure what other think of my singing but i certainly enjoy it. Everyone that knows me knows i am heavily into my music. But no one knows that I secretly wish I was a famous singer! Shhh....

5. I am still scared of dogs. When i was a child i had a fear of dogs that was more like a phobia. I have been better in recent years but my fear is certainly alive and well. Only now i have to hide it... especially from Owen and my friends. Can you image me at a friends place with a dog squealling like a little girl? How embarassing!!!

6. I have never ridden a horse. I am too scared to. They are huge and powerful and i am sure i would love it but hmmm. I rode a pony a few times as a kid but i have never been horse ridding where you are the sole person in control of where the horse goes. I have always wondered what it would be like to ride a horse along a bush trail or across a beach. Maybe i should embrace my fear.

I am tagging Karina and only Karina... as i dont really know anyone else with a blog... oh how sad! :'( LOL

POST OVERLOAD!!!

ha ha ha so here is my last post for the day.... i needed to make up for the absence! :P

These pics were taken last Monday. Owen had an icky doctors appointment (not all his appointments with his doctors are icky but he missed playgroup for this one and it wasn't the greatest visit). So to make it up to my little monkey i took him to Homebush Bay where we had a big play in Bicentennial Park. It was warming up to be a hot day and Owen really wanted to go to the pools. But seeing as though it was lunchtime i knew this was out of the question. Lucky for Owen on our way out of the park i noticed some kids (about 8 or so) in their cozzies playing in the fountains. Owen didnt have his swimmers but i didnt care... we needed FUN!!! LOL Here are a few FUN pics...

This day was definitely a three F day! ...Free, Fun & Fabulous! Something we will certainly do again sometime soon!

A close up of a card made with Basic Grey Ambrosia (love that range!), Bazzill and some Kaiser Bling. Gotta love a bit of bling! :P

A card I made for a wedding with some American Crafts paper, Bazzill, some white flowers & ribbon, a Basic Grey rub-on and some Kaiser Bling.

A Layout I completed for www.craftools.com.au using lots of odds and sodds. The big letters are painted chipboard and there is plenty of doodling. The technique I loved the most was using Quickutz dies in the Cuttlebug. Sooo easy!

So there you have it. Some creative eye candy. Happy Scrapping!

Spring Has Sprung

Winter is officially over! ...YAY!!! lol

Today is the first day of spring and the weather could not be more beautiful! It's a lovely 21degrees and blue sky stretches to the horizon. I am already feeling inspired to create! I'll be back later with my photo of the week and more importantly some creative eye candy!

5 Years ago I was 22yrs old and had an obsession with beading. I made cards but I hadn't started scrapbooking yet.

What are five things on your to-do list for today?
1) Get Owen to Pre-school on time (LMAO!)

2) Get work on time (I made it with 5mins to spare. traffic was horrific today!)

3) Cancel paediatrician appointment

4) Call my mum

5) Get a full nights sleep

1) Lollies!

Inkurable Stampers August Challenge

This is a layout I created for a stamping challenge from

www.inkurablestampers.blogspot.com.

The challenge was to create a project using flower stamps,

and at least 1 other kind of stamp!

Be as creative as possible, and think outside the square!

My inspiration came from an artist that i admire...

Adrienne Looman. She is a doodling Queen!!!

On this layout I have used:

* Pebbles Foam Stamps - Flower and Circle
* Making Memories Paint - Red Wagon
* Bazzill cardstock; White and Blue
* Printed Paper - Creative Cafe

* Transperancy
* Journaling Sticker & Scallop Sticker - Creative Cafe
* Thickers

* Ribbon - Scrap In Style
* Brads and Buttons
* Black Zig Writer

* Black Slick Writer - Fine Tip

* White Gel Pen - Medium

* Red Glitter Gel Pen

I stamped the transperancy with Pebbles foam stamps and MM Paint.
I used a Slick writer and white gel pen to doodle on the front surface.
I then attached it to my cardstock as a background.

The red borders I created by painting and then doodling with black,
white and red pens. There is also doodling on the buttons and
brads down the side of the layout.

Playground Fun

Here are two pics I took today using my phone. Owen calls this playground the 'spiderweb park'. Too cute!

He really suprised me the first time we came here. I had no idea just how capable of climbing the ropes he would be.

We had so much fun climbing after one another and hanging out together. (excuse the pun lol)

Can't wait to scrapbook these photos!

I took this photo yesterday at Lachlan's 3rd Birthday Bash. It was a family event but Owen received an invite because he is Lachlan's best mate. The kids were playing all morning and I took quite a few photos... ok so i took about 175 photos lol... but this pic was one of my favourites.

More often than not my layouts are very busy. I like to do a lot on one layout. Lots of little bits and pieces. My layouts usually involve hand doodling or something quite time consuming and fiddly. For this layout however I decided to let the techniques and photos take the lime light for a change. I tried something new with my style as well... I am normally a bright and colourful scrapper and dont often use techniques that resemble shabby chic. I had fun with it and I think I achieved my goal.

This is something totally new to me. The world of 'blogging' has seemed so daunting for so long. But now that I have a blog to call my very own I am excited about the possibilities.

I have BIG plans for this space, but for now I will keep it simple. Posting inspiration as it hits me and sharing my creativity with you.
